Band/Musician: Bia
Album: Nocturno
Label: Audiogram

By: Eric Rosenhek

Montreal-based artist Bia picked a perfect time to release her fifth full-length album, Nocturno. The album, which means “nightly” in Spanish, has 15 tracks that are ideal for a summer night’s calming atmosphere. If you are planning to hold a backyard BBQ or just sit at the cottage and stare out onto the lake, Nocturno should be your accompaniment while you celebrate the summer.

Each song has a smooth sound that calms your senses. Anyone who listens to this album will be compelled to find a Muskoka chair, put their feet up and relax. Although you might not understand the lyrics (all the songs are sung in French and Spanish), you will still be able to appreciate Bia’s vocal talents. She has a soothing voice that is commanding but soft. Bia has the ability to tell you do something; and even though you might comply, you do so on your own free will and not because she told you to do it.

Another strength of the album is its variety of music. The majority of songs have a significant jazz sound, with small hints of rock, folk, Latin-pop, and klezmer. Tracks to look forward to include “Mes Zariots,” a well-paced tune that will make you tap your toes, and “Personne,” a smooth duet with fellow Montrealer, Thomas Hellman.

Of course, Nocturno can be listened to during any season. However, the summer poses the perfect setting for this album. You will certainly enjoy Nocturno in the winter, spring and fall; but you will get the full experience during the summer.
